Privacy Policy — Somewhere
Last updated: 2 October 2026
Reading and translating a listing happens entirely on your device. Using the extension requires signing in to a Somewhere account with an active subscription; signing in never carries listing content. Somewhere has two surfaces: the Inspector, which reads the property listing you are viewing only when you ask and explains it in Somewhere's own side panel — it adds nothing to the property website except temporary markers when you ask it to check a detail — and Somewhere Search, a browser side panel where you state a search once and open it, correctly filtered, on the Italian property portals. Both run inside your own browser. The extension talks to our servers only to sign you in and out and to check that your subscription is active; there is no tracking. Your search leaves your browser only inside a portal link you choose to click — and this policy says exactly where each click sends it.
What the extension accesses
When you click the Somewhere button on a supported listing page, or choose "Translate listing to English", the extension reads that single page — for example the price, size, rooms, fees, reference number and description text — so it can show those facts back to you and point out what the listing does not state. Supported listing pages are on immobiliare.it, casa.it, gate-away.com, wikicasa.it, idealista.it and engelvoelkers.com. On those six sites the extension can also see the web addresses of your open tabs without a click, so the panel can recognise a listing page; it reads a page's content only when you ask. The click also decides what opens: a supported listing page opens the Inspector; anywhere else the same button opens the Somewhere Search panel instead, and reads nothing.
Two other reads happen only when you ask. "Read my selection" reads only the text you have highlighted on the page you are viewing. When you ask the panel to check a detail — heating, for example — it searches the visible text of that page for matching words and marks them.
The extension does not read the content of other tabs, your browsing history, or any page you have not asked it to read.
The Somewhere Search panel reads only what you type or choose in it: a comune, sale or rental, and optional filters such as price, size, rooms and bathrooms. Comune names and search areas come from lists packaged inside the extension, so looking up a comune contacts no one.
Where your data goes — the three cases
- Local processing. Your search, the listing facts the Inspector reads, and translations are processed in your browser. Translation uses Chrome's built-in on-device translator: the first use may make Chrome download a language pack, and the listing text is never sent to us or to a translation service. Your search and the properties you save to Favorites stay in this browser until you close Chrome or the extension is updated or reloaded. They are not stored across browser sessions, not linked to your account, and never sent to somewhere.properties. What the extension has read is kept in memory while you browse, so you can switch tabs and come back; nothing from a listing is written to storage unless you save it to Favorites. A saved Favorite holds the listing's facts, your confirmations, and how it compares with your search.
- Portal links you choose to open. Clicking a generated search link sends that portal — and only that portal — a web address containing your chosen comune, sale or rental, the filters that portal supports, and, if you chose it, the newest-first sort. For engelvoelkers.com the address also carries the outline of the chosen comune, taken from the list packaged in the extension — never your own location. Opening a saved Favorite goes to that listing's own address. No portal is contacted before your click, and somewhere.properties never receives your search.
- Your account and subscription. To use the extension you sign in to your Somewhere account. The extension then contacts our authentication provider, Supabase, to sign you in, keep you signed in and sign you out, and asks Somewhere's own server (propertylens-api.onrender.com) whether your subscription is active — when the panel opens or comes back into view, after you sign in, and when you ask it to check again. These requests carry only sign-in data — authorisation codes and session tokens: never listing content, your search, or your Favorites. Subscriptions are paid on the somewhere.properties website through Stripe; the extension never handles payment details.
Account sign-in
Reading and translating a property listing happens locally on your device. Somewhere does not receive the contents of a listing simply because you open or inspect it in your browser, whether you are signed in or not.
Signing in is a separate, explicit action. When you sign in, the extension communicates with our authentication provider and Somewhere's servers as necessary to authenticate you, maintain your account session, and check that your subscription is active.
Authentication-related information is used only to provide and secure your Somewhere account. Signing in does not itself transmit the contents of the property listing you are viewing.
Authentication information. Collected when you sign in: the session tokens used to authenticate your Somewhere account and keep you signed in. They are used only for account authentication and session management, and are transmitted only to Somewhere and our authentication provider as necessary for those purposes.
Personally identifiable information. Your email address is included in the authentication session after sign-in and is used to identify your Somewhere account. It is used only for account authentication and management, and is processed by Somewhere and our authentication provider as necessary for those purposes.
You can sign out from the extension panel at any time.
If you are signed out, or your subscription is not active, the panel shows sign-in and subscription options instead of its features. Anything read from a listing stays on your device, as described above.
What the extension never does
Somewhere:
- does not transmit listing content, search criteria, or anything derived from them, to any server — including ours — except inside a link you explicitly click;
- does not write what it reads from a listing to storage unless you save it to Favorites. Your search and Favorites stay in this browser until you close Chrome or the extension is updated or reloaded, and are never sent to somewhere.properties;
- does not use cookies, analytics, tracking, or fingerprinting;
- does not sell or rent any user data, and shares it with no third party except our authentication provider, which receives only sign-in data, and the portal whose search link you explicitly click, which receives only the criteria in that URL;
- does not use any data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.
Remote code and bundled data
The extension contains no remote code. All of its logic is included in the package you install from the Chrome Web Store. It loads no external scripts, no external images, and executes no code fetched at runtime.
The extension bundles three datasets, all used locally: the municipality list the panel searches (derived from ISTAT, "Elenco dei comuni italiani", licensed under CC BY 4.0, creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0); simplified municipality boundaries used for engelvoelkers.com search links (derived from ISTAT, "Confini delle unità amministrative a fini statistici", generalised version, 1 January 2026, CC BY 4.0); and a table of gate-away.com's own place-page addresses, built from gate-away.com's public sitemap. No ISTAT endorsement implied.
Permissions
activeTab— lets the extension read the tab you are actively viewing, only when you click — including the text you select with "Read my selection" on pages outside the six supported sites.scripting— runs the Inspector's reader on that page, only after you click. It inserts no interface into the page at rest; the explanation appears in Somewhere's own side panel. When you click a Check door in the panel — Check heating, for example — it draws temporary numbered markers beside the matching text on the page, and removes them once you choose or cancel.sidePanel— lets the browser show the Somewhere Search panel. It grants no access to any website.storage— used for two things. Session memory for your search and the properties you save to Favorites: it keeps what you're looking for and the properties you save until you close Chrome or the extension is updated or reloaded, and nothing else from a listing is written to storage. And, once you sign in, your account session, stored locally on this device until you sign out. Sync storage is never used — your sign-in never leaves this device through Chrome's own sync.identity— used only to support signing in to your Somewhere account via OAuth. Not used for tracking or browsing history.- Site access for immobiliare.it, casa.it, gate-away.com, wikicasa.it, idealista.it and engelvoelkers.com — so Somewhere can recognise a listing page there and follow you between listings; it reads a page's content only when you ask, as described above.
All five permissions and the six site accesses are used solely to deliver the extension's purpose: explaining the listing you are viewing, building portal searches, and signing you in to your account. None is used to read the content of pages you have not asked about, and none sends anything from a listing anywhere.
Changes to this policy
This policy describes the extension as it currently behaves. If a future version changes how it handles data, this policy will be updated before that version ships, and the "last updated" date above will change.
